Texas Holdem Pot Odd
Pot Odd plays a very important role in playing Texas Holdem poker.
Especially in fixed limit games, the calculation of pot odd is more important.
Let's go into the detail of Texas Holdem pot odd...
Pot money is the money collected from bets of all players during the game, is the money placed at the middle of the table and will be given to the winner.
Pot odd is basically the number of outs (number of cards left that can make your hand a winning hand) comparing to the total pot amount.
This is how you calculating Pot Odd:
EXAMPLE
- Let's say your are on a $5/$10 Fixed table with open-ended to a straight (e.g 2,3,4,5 or 9,19,J,Q, etc)
- 4 cards drawn in the middle of the table. Only one last card (the River card) will be drawn.
- You have 8 outs (cards) can make your hand a straight.
- and the pot money is $100
- One player bets $10 and there are only 2 players left.
- Is this a good Pot Odd to pay $10 to see the river cards?
- You have 8 outs, the chance of you hitting a straight is 8 out of 46 cards, which is almost (1/6) every 6 times you will be hit your straight once.
- There is already $110 in the pot (including that player's $10 bet).
- You only need to bet $10, which is 1/11 comparing to the pot money.
- So this is a good pot odd to bet $10 to see the river card.
Solution 2
- Say for the above example, if the pot money is $40, then it's not a good pot odd to bet the $10 to see the river.
Because for average, you only will hit a straight once in every 6 times. It's not worth to put out $60 to win $40 in the pot.
Hope this give you an idea of how to calculating pot odd in Texas Holdem poker.
